IPhone illustrates technology’s power

The computer security specialists gave away 50 Dell laptops to people in 10 countries, the machines armed only with the basic McAfee antivirus software. The idea was to track phishing scams, where the intent is to get you to divulge financial details by sending you to fake Web addresses made up to look like real banks and other institutions. In one month of the test, the participants received 104,000 messages, which works out to about 70 per day. With PCs now stuffed with spyware, the testers saw performance drop like a stone. And get this: Of the 104,000 letters, fewer than 24,000 were in English, so I seem to be on to something in observing that spam and malware scams are increasingly internationalized.Linux or a Mac can sharply reduce the virus threat, but phishing scams have a life of their own and show up no matter what equipment you use.

Software as the New Frontier

“That’s a Microsoft problem. I don’t support Microsoft.”

I could easily imagine the sort of thing happened in a software-a-la-carte world.

Although changing software models seem likely to disrupt the channel and possibly disintermediate it for the short term, I can also see a longer term scenario in which the role of the channel is actually strengthened by the end customers’ need to have someone in their court who can maintain the context of the overall solution and function as the honest broker among the vendors.

Sound familiar? The more the role of the channel changes, the more it stays the same. But channel programs are likely to change to accommodate the new model. And how those programs will need to change in order to maximize results is exactly the question that is keeping vendor executives awake at night.

Got the Blu-ray blues?

Having said that, once you have compliant hardware and software to play BD movies, getting a Blu-ray movie to play on the PC is actually a lot more straightforward than it sounds.

Considering that the BC-1205PT only reads Blu-ray discs and doesn’t burn them I would have thought that at the very least Asus would have included some kind of software to playback Blu-ray movies out of the box.

In any case, playback was pretty much standard after completing the setup I tried BD copies of The Fifth Element, Blade Runner: The Final Cut and 300 and they all played okay. I found the spin-up times from initial click to actually starting the movie to be quite acceptable.

Why iPhone 2.0 won’t yet rule the roost in the enterprise

I can sync to Exchange’s public calendar, or I can sync to my computer’s personal calendar (iCal, in my case), but not both. I don’t put my personal business on the company’s shared calendar, so I need to be able to sync to both. Sure, iCal has my Exchange appointments, but when I’m traveling or commuting and don’t have my computer with me, if I sync with iCal (as I do), I can’t get any updates from Exchange wirelessly. I can sort of get around that if I get an e-mail invitation from Exchange — accepting the invitation puts it in my iPod Touch’s calendar — but that’s really a workaround.

4. Primitive calendar support, part 2. Like many execs, I have some standing meetings that are every three weeks or the on fifth of the month. But iPhone doesn’t support those — yet Exchange does.

Fujitsu Lifebook U810

Their 6.75 x 5.25 inch footprint is more like that of an early PDA than any sort of notebook computer. It’s just an inch thick, though a battery bulge at the back adds another quarter of an inch or so. And the little machine weighs just 1.3 pounds, far less than any ultra-light notebook. Of course, you also get less computer than with a standard ultra-light. This is, after all, a convertible UMPC.

The U Series’ display measures just 5.6 inch diagonally and it uses a 1024 x 600 pixel format. That means a rather tiny screen but decent resolution. The picture below, from the Japanse website, shows how the U Series converts from a notebook to a slate.

On the technology and specification side, things look pretty good. The U Series is powered by an 800MHz version of the Intel A110 processor, a chip designed specifically for the UMPC platform.

MetaRAM’s MetaSDRAM Technology Now Available From Supermicro

The MetaSDRAM chipset, which sits between the memory controller and the DRAM, solves the memory capacity problem cost effectively by enabling up to four times more mainstream DRAMs to be integrated into existing DIMMs without the need for any hardware or software changes. The chipset makes multiple DRAMs look like a larger capacity DRAM to the memory controller. The result is “stealth” high-capacity memory that circumvents the normal limitations set by the memory controller. This new technology has accelerated memory technology development by 2-4 years.

Supermicro will be demonstrating its two new products with MetaRAM at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) ‘08, June 17-19, at the International Congress Center Dresden in Dresden, Germany, booth B25-B28.
