It’s Not Easy Being a Restaurant Guide, Jukebox, Game Console and

As in software bugs, the type that cause the occasional freeze, crash or system reboot of the still-awesome gadget I shelled out $600 for about a year ago. Every once in a while, when I try to fire up a program, it fails to launch. Others sometimes flicker out unexpectedly and return the iPhone to its home screen.

Sigh.

While the long lines of folks queued up to buy the new iPhone 3G in past weeks got most of the attention, for many iPhone and iPod fans, the more significant development was the opening of Apple’s new App Store, which makes downloading and installing applications as easy as downloading a song off iTunes. Some of the more than 800 software programs available so far are free, and some aren’t. Some are useful, and some are just for fun. Most programs don’t seem to have problems, though I’m getting used to the occasional software blooper now that I’ve loaded my gadget up with a couple dozen or so of the things.

The key to data wiping

Nobody considers buying a PC without having antivirus software. Why not run erasing software as part of the process at the end of the computer’s life cycle?”

But is just deleting your data every time you get rid of computers the smartest thing to do? What if you have 1000 computers to get rid of?

Wiping everything may take up more time, energy and money than it’s worth, says Milton Baar, director of IT Security consultants The Swoose Partnership, and committee member of Standards Australia IT 12/4, which represents Australia for ISO27001, the international standard for information security management.

“Organisations should start a thousand miles earlier than end of financial year,” says MrBaar. “They need corporate governance practices, which cover information security issues.

Eastern provides protection against computer viruses

For students, Eastern has purchased Symantec antivirus software, which is a free download.

“Symantec does constant and periodic scans,” DeYoung said. “There are such things called Zero day viruses, which have not been reported and therefore cannot be detected and scanned by antivirus software. However, Symantec does a great job at giving us up-to-minute updates.”

The Mess That is Linux Volume Management

About the same time I learned about volume management, I learned about software-RAID too. However, mastering the Linux’ mdadm commando looked quite difficult. I was rather scared of the mdadm tool. That doesn’t make sense at all for somebody who used the dmsetup commando to setup encrypted partitions, but choices are not always rational. However, I found out about Enterprise Volume Management System, a graphical frontend which handles LVM2, software RAID and even much more. “That’s what I’ve been looking for!” I thought. About reading some more, I even thought “Phew, this EVMS thing is going to save me a lot of time!”. Indeed it did, when setting up my new volume management scheme. However, I couldn’t have foreseen the way it would screw up that very same scheme two years later.
The Scheme The scheme was quite complex for a home-PC; but I’ll try to explain.

Mind on matter

But the work also often requires long hours in isolation, building devices or making calculations (often on the computer).

But if you are an explorer, one who likes to see parts of nature that few others have seen, naturally like to take things apart, and spend time over details, these are good indicators for a career in physics.

Adware Components Top BitDefender’s List of E-Threats in June

The top three threats of the month are trojans, two of which are adware components and the third is part of a fake (or rogue) antivirus.

In first place is Trojan,Clicker.CM, a popup-ad-serving trojan being distributed via infected websites. Next on the list is Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N, a simple downloader which points victims’ browsers at Adware.PlayMp3z.A. Trojan.FakeAlert.PP placed third and is found in web pages which attempt to convince users to install “XP antivirus” which is not an antivirus at all, but rather a fake antivirus which claims to have found viruses and demands money to remove them.

“We were taken a bit by surprise when we compiled the data, since the top comprises the exact same trojans in the exact same order as last month’s menaces — a rather unusual occurrence,” commented Sorin Dudea, Head of BitDefender AV Research.

HP Ties Project Management Into Code’s Operational Lifecycle

Hewlett-Packard, a quiet company in the noisy software sector, is expanding its systems and software management portfolio to include a version of its Project and Portfolio Management Center that ties into several existing technology optimization products.

Few trumpets will herald the move, but it illustrates how HP is building out its core software, formerly known as the OpenView product line, into a comprehensive data center management suite. The announcement of Project and Portfolio Management Center 7.5 shows how HP is trying to get beyond the simplistic “Is the system up and running?” question to the hitherto difficult-to-discern issues. They include such things as how frequently has that application needed fixing, what are the fixes costing us, and when should we replace it?

Project and portfolio management in the general sense is an application meant to give visibility into software development projects and make the resulting code more manageable as it moves into its production life cycle.
