IF-MAP provides a standardized framework for network and security devices to publish device state data–such as IP address, authentication, or virtually any meaningful information–to a central repository that can be used by other applications. This repository can be used for security, asset management, discovery, or any other purpose. THE PLAYERS IF-MAP has been in development for more than two years within the Trusted Network Connect working group. Now that the specification is live, any vendor or developer can use IF-MAP to publish or request data. Enterprise IT groups can be key players here by demanding that their vendors sit up and take notice. THE PROSPECTS Whether IF-MAP achieves broad adoption depends on whether vendors actively develop integration points. IF-MAP has all the features necessary to aggregate host information in a standardized format, including enabling vendors to add their own attributes.
