Symantec Plans Release of "Zero-Impact" Norton

Symantec is attempting to find a way to keep its consumer security software line from bogging down computers with an upcoming release of its popular Norton 360, according to a recent Wall Street Journal posting.

Symantec execs said that in general, its security software works by embedding itself into a PC operating system to scan for abnormal behavior that indicates the presence of malware or some kind of malicious code.

However, in the upcoming version of Norton 360, Symantec’s consumer security software line, the Cupertino-based company plans to make use of a technology that incorporates a statistical approach to find malware. Instead of directly linking to the computer’s operating system, the security software will search for patterns, such as total number of PCs on which certain software is installed.

HELSINGIN SANOMAT INTERNATIONAL EDITION – HOME

Antivirus software is generally powerless against viruses programmed for a one-off attack. The virus causes no damage to the computer, and remains unnoticed by the user. The purpose is simply that of gathering secret information. Such an operation requires weeks or even months of advance surveillance, because the message aimed at luring the victim to open the mail needs to be credible. Hyppönen says that the victim is chosen in such a way as to gain access to large amounts of data. The most complicated and most meticulously prepared attacks in the world have targeted small human rights organisations. The choice of targets might be seen to reveal something about the spy.

Defrag Now as Vital as Anti-Virus

The results show defrag and antivirus on equal footing as a vital best server practice.

Of 179 Network Administrators asked “What software do you consider vital to have on your servers?” — 48% responded with “Antivirus/Symantec” and 45% “Defrag/Diskeeper.” Viruses and file fragmentation are now on par as performance degradation issues to be eliminated.

When next asked “Why do you personally feel defragmentation is vital, particularly for servers?” — 61% responded with “Performance / Speed / Keeps Systems Smooth.”

Every machine suffers from file fragmentation. But server fragmentation levels are particularly exacerbated by multiple user traffic. This translates to network slows, sluggish boot times and excessively long anti-virus scans.

Diskeeper© Server 2008 eradicates these delays permanently and automatically — with no intervention or scheduling required on the part of the Admin.

Will this tool replace Exchange with Gmail & keep Outlook?

Pike also claimed that MailShadowG doesn’t create multiple versions of the same calendar event, a problem with some calendar synchronization software. “Our algorithm is very immune to that,” he said.

Cemaphore, which was founded in 2002, is no fresh start-up. According to Pike, the company already has about 100 corporate customers and 70,000 licensed seats for a non-Google MailShadow product that can be used to replicate Exchange messages for business continuity purposes and during upgrades from one version of Exchange Server to another.

But being in beta, MailShadowG isn’t perfect. For example, some testers with large Exchange e-mail boxes have had problems during the initial upload of their directories into Gmail, Pike said, although he blamed that on Google.

IBM PROJECT BIG GREEN -ALOITE TUO RATKAISUJA VIHREÄN

Data centers house computer servers and equipment that are consuming increasingly larger amounts of energy as demand for computing power grows worldwide. In the past year, IBM has engaged with more than 2,000 clients to deliver hardware, software and services technologies that have helped them reduce data center energy consumption and cut energy costs by as much as 40 percent.

IBM Modular Data Centers – Scaling for the long term while slashing energy costs today

The second phase of Project Big Green intends to drive greater advancements in energy efficiencies by making data centers more flexible in matching information technology (IT) needs to capital and operating costs. The data center environment is going through dramatic change. According to the EPA, energy costs for these environments are doubling every five years and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air/Conditioning Engineers expects technology densities to increase by 20 times in this decade.

Who Wants to Recoup $1 Million? Spector 360 Success Story Outlines

“The Wood Group sees a comprehensive and complete security package as including a firewall, antivirus software, web filtering, and employee monitoring … with Spector 360.”

Regarding the value of lost productivity, Benov said: “Spector 360 has absolutely increased productivity. Considering the impact it has had … Spector 360 definitely is worth the price. If you get back just 10 hours of work per employee a year, Spector 360 pays for itself many times over.”

Doing the Math
Benov said that most IMV Projects employees make $30 to $40 an hour. Using Benov’s conservative estimate of 10 hours of work recouped per employee per year – and factoring in the lower end of the compensation range – the yearly cost savings estimate is $195,000. At $40 an hour, the cost savings estimate increases to $260,000.

Supercomputer used by American military sets record for speed

It has also produced software and hardware technologies that have rapidly spilled out into the rest of the computer industry for consumer and business products.

Technology is flowing in the opposite direction as well. Consumer-oriented computing began dominating research and development spending on technology shortly after the Cold War ended in the late 1980 s, and that trend is evident in the design of the world’s fastest computers.

Roadrunner is based on a radical design that includes 12, 960 chips that are an improved version of an IBM Cell microprocessor, a parallel processing chip originally created for Sony’s PlayStation 3 videogame machine. The Sony chips are used as accelerators, or turbochargers, for portions of calculations.

Roadrunner also includes a smaller number of more conventional Opteron processors, made by Advanced Micro Devices, which are already widely used in corporate servers.
